Au 13 ème siècle, ce fut la seconde capitale de la Lituanie. La ville est alors un centre militaire, administratif et économique pour le pays. Lorsque vers 1323, Vilnius devient capitale, Trakai reste la résidence des grands-ducs de Lituanie jusqu’au milieu du 15 ème siècle. Ceux-ci reçoivent les ambassadeurs et les souverains étrangers, impressionnés par la beauté du site et les hautes tours du château en briques.

During the 13th century, it was the second capital of Lithuania. The city was a military, administrative and economic center for the country. When, around 1323, Vilnius became the capital, Trakai remained the residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania until the mid 15th century. They were receiving the ambassadors and the foreign sovereigns, impressed by the beauty of the site and the high towers of the brick castle.
